Amazing Japanese Sukiya House
Sukiya / 数寄屋 is the authentic Japanese architecture which is simple, sound and graceful. Elegant rooms, spiritual tea rooms, admired tatami floors, old wood pillars, and beautiful gardens and ponds. Its simplicity is ultimate sophistication.
Its origin dates back to Azuchi Momoyama era / 安土桃山時代, when reign of the famous Shogun Nobunaga Oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi lasted in Japan. They loved Sukiya style as official residences and the architecture gradually was spread to common people’s houses and life style.
Since then, Japanese houses have been built influenced by Sukiya style. In the construction process, customers tell how they want to build rooms, for example materials, atmosphere, expression, colors and so on. Accordingly carpenters make fixtures and ensure it is right. Communication between two sides shall be well-cultivated.
However in the modern era, particularly after the WW II, the authentic Japanese housing was took place to prefabricated housing, which is just a choosing process in living in house makers’ catalogues. As Sukiya style is very expensive and piecework process so that its tradition soon became extinct. Plus, Japanese are not only badly intimidates Western style but also and buys a full of appliances, furniture, and gadgets to their narrow spaces. So they lives in ”rabbit hutches”.
Therefore the Abiko Sukiya Guest House is very rare and highly valuable. Its Sukiya grade and status is amazing. The house is in well-kept conditions inside and outside. The façades and the garden are also beautiful. It is like inhaling the flavors of great vintage sake.
